The University of Maryland houses a small but growing collection of artists’ books and fine press works. This teaching collection has been used by college, graduate, and high school classes, offering students a hands-on encounter with creativity. Some of the books are sculptural or playfully challenge the conventions of traditional books, making each visit a chance to see the art of the book in unexpected forms.
How to Find Artists’ Books
To search for artists’ books, use the WorldCat UMD catalog. In Advanced Search, select “Subject” from the first pull-down menu and type “artists’ books” into the free text field. Under “Narrow your search,” select “Maryland Room Collections, Hornbake Library” and hit search. This will provide access to artists’ books as well as reference materials. Fine press books can be found similarly by searching “Fine Press Specimens” under the same location. Each title offers a glimpse into the creativity and craft of book arts, blending teaching and inspiration.
Getting to the Library
The collection is housed in Hornbake Library North at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742. The campus has eight libraries, and artists’ books sit alongside rare books, archives, and Marylandia in Hornbake. You can reach the university by car or public transport. If using the Green line, take it to College Park and board the university shuttle outside the station. At the shuttle’s final stop, cross to Hornbake Library North and enter through the plaza-facing entrance. The Maryland Room is directly across from the front entrance, its glass front welcoming visitors to the collection inside.
Planning Your Visit
No appointment is necessary, but bring your ID. As an academic library, hours shift with the semester schedule, so check the website before you go. Before entering the Maryland Room, leave your bag in the adjacent locker, and a staff member will buzz you in. Library staff at the desk will assist with registration and help you access the books you need. For questions, you can call 301-405-9212. Each visit offers a quiet, focused space to explore creativity, learning, and the tactile pleasure of artists’ books.
A Space for Learning and Creativity
Visiting the University of Maryland Library is more than research; it’s a chance to see how books can be both objects of art and tools for education. Every page invites attention, every volume sparks curiosity, and every visit leaves a sense of quiet inspiration.
