Reading Time: 2 minutes

The National Gallery of Art Library began its artists’ books collection in 1991, thanks to a generous donation from Patricia G. England. Over the years, the library has continued to acquire new works, building a collection of hundreds of pieces. The collection highlights fine press books, books about art and architecture, and literary works, reflecting the library’s dedication to preserving both visual and textual creativity.

Exhibitions at the library often feature these works, creating a dialogue between art and literature. A recent exhibition, Text as Inspiration: Artists’ Books and Literature, explored how the written word can inspire visual expression. One particularly striking example is Laura Davidson’s Florence: Travel Guide Series, a six-paneled tunnel book created in 2003. Limited to 500 signed copies, it illustrates the craftsmanship and imagination the library preserves.

Finding Artists’ Books

Artists’ books in the National Gallery of Art Library are cataloged in multiple ways. Some are listed as artists’ books, others as fine press works, and some appear under both categories. To explore the collection, you can use the Mercury online public access catalog. By searching for the phrase “artists’ books” and combining it with “fine press collection,” you can generate a list that includes both artistic multiples and finely crafted press editions. The catalog allows researchers to discover the depth and variety of the library’s holdings, from reference materials to primary works that showcase the artistry of the book form.

How to Get There

The library is housed in the East Building of the National Gallery of Art, located in downtown Washington, DC. Visitors arriving by Metro can take the Red Line to Judiciary Square or the Yellow or Green Lines to Archives. From either station, a short walk leads to the East Building, where the library entrance is on 4th Street NW. The museum itself provides a sense of calm and focus, making it a fitting environment to explore the world of artists’ books.
