About the Collection
The artists’ book collection at the National Museum of Women in the Arts highlights the creativity and innovation of women artists.
It includes a wide variety of sculptural and mixed-media works, many of which are one-of-a-kind or created from unconventional materials such as bedsheets, latex, a wine bottle, or even a fish spine.
This large and eclectic collection reflects the experimental nature of book art and offers a view into how women artists redefine the book as a form of expression.
Unlike traditional libraries, the museum treats artists’ books as part of its art collection, not its literary holdings.
Because of this, these works are often featured in rotating exhibitions that showcase book art as both concept and craft.
Visitors interested in research or viewing specific pieces are encouraged to also explore current exhibitions during their visit.
Finding Artists’ Books
To locate artists’ books within the NMWA collection, the most effective approach is to contact the Curator of Book Arts directly by phone at 202-783-7364 or by email.
The museum’s online catalog currently does not provide a full listing of artists’ books in its art collection.
Partial listings can be found by browsing collection highlights or by using the site search and entering “artists’ books.”
Additionally, the museum’s library catalog can be used for research on rare book holdings.
In the advanced search section, select “more options,” check the “Rare” shelving location, and enter “artists’ books” as the keyword.
This search returns artists’ books housed in the rare book collection but not those in the art collection.
For comprehensive access, contacting the curator remains the best option.
